I came to photograph baby Sophia and her family in Port Elgin on the day she turned one month old. I don’t prescribe to the idea that you must have your newborn photos done between day 5 and day 7. Yes, at that age you may have a dreamy, sleepy, still curled up newborn, but not always. Some families and babies are not ready at that point. Moms may be recovering from hard births, babies may be adjusting to, well, being in the world. I see newborn as anywhere up to 6 weeks or even 3 months if you consider that the 4th trimester.
We are new-ish to the Kincardine and Port Elgin area having only moved here 3 years ago, two of which have been spent in pandemic solitude, so I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Rakhee was born and raised in Brampton. My dad and her mom even spent most of their lives working at Nortel. It really is a small world.
Their son, Eli, was very happy to show me around. His dinosaurs, his hula-hoop, his dance moves!
Newborn sessions with toddlers are very different than first babies. They are louder. They are often excited that a new person is in their house with a giant camera. And honestly, they do not want to sit still and smile with all the fun going on. I don’t expect them to. I have two high energy boys at home and have been capturing them for eight years. It is tricky but not impossible.
Later in the session, I listened to Rakhee settle Sophia by rocking her in her jungle themed bedroom while singing The Lion Sleeps Tonight. She told me it is their 'Family Song'. I love that they have intentionally chosen a song for their family. I have been thinking about it ever since.
