Port Elgin Newborn Photos – Meet Baby Sophia at One Month Old

When Rakhee and her family invited me to capture their Port Elgin newborn photos, baby Sophia had just turned one month old. There's a common belief that newborn photos must happen between day 5 and day 7. And yes, that golden window can give you a dreamy, curled-up, sleepy newborn. But it doesn't work for every family and honestly, it doesn't have to. Moms may still be recovering from difficult births. Babies may need a little extra time to settle into the world. That's why I consider newborn to mean anytime up to 6 weeks, or even up to 3 months if you embrace the concept of the fourth trimester. Your family, your timeline.

Why Later Newborn Photos Might Be Right for Your Family

There's no wrong time to document this season but there are some real advantages to waiting a little longer, and not enough photographers talk about them.

Mom is more recovered. The early days postpartum are intense. Whether you had a straightforward birth or a really hard one, your body has been through something significant. By three to four weeks, many moms feel more like themselves more comfortable, more present, and genuinely able to enjoy the session rather than just survive it.

Your whole family has found a rhythm. The fog of those first days starts to lift. You know your baby a little better. You've figured out the feeding, the settling, the little quirks that make them them. That ease shows up in photos.

Baby's eyes are wide open. Those early sleepy newborn poses are beautiful but so is a baby who is alert, looking around, and actually gazing up at you. Some of my favourite images from sessions like Sophia's are the ones where she's just looking, taking it all in.

My approach to Port Elgin newborn photos is lifestyle and documentary meaning I'm not posing your family into something that doesn't feel like you. I'm watching, waiting, and photographing the real moments as they happen. The way you hold her. The way your toddler climbs up beside you. The song you sing when nothing else works. Those are the images you'll come back to in twenty years.

One of my favourite parts of doing newborn photography in Port Elgin and the Kincardine area is the connections I get to make. I'm relatively new to Bruce County so I was genuinely delighted to discover that Rakhee grew up in Brampton like I did. We even uncovered a wild coincidence: her mom and my dad both spent years working at Nortel. It really is a small world.

Big Brother Eli Steals the Show

Newborn sessions with toddlers are a completely different experience than first-baby sessions in the best, most chaotic, way. Toddlers are louder, more enthusiastic, and absolutely not interested in sitting still when there's a person with a giant camera in their living room. Eli was no exception. He was thrilled to give me the full tour: his dinosaurs, his hula-hoop, his best dance moves.

I'm not fazed by the energy. I have two high-energy boys of my own and have been photographing them for years. Capturing the beautiful chaos of a toddler welcoming a new sibling? That is the story.

Later in the session, I listened to Rakhee settle Sophia by rocking her in her jungle themed bedroom while singing The Lion Sleeps Tonight. She told me it is their 'Family Song'. I love that they have intentionally chosen a song for their family. I have been thinking about it ever since.
