What to Expect from your Kincardine Family Photo Session

Booking a Kincardine family photo session can feel stressful, especially when there are so many local photographers doing amazing work. With so many options you want to choose a photographer whose style and personality will work well with your family. My hope is this post will give you an idea of what my family photo sessions look like and give you a sense of my photography personality to see if we would be a good fit.

Family Photo Sessions with me will take place in and around your home

I like to photograph you in your own space. Your kids and spouse will be much more relaxed and easy going in a familiar environment. This is especially true of younger children who love their routines and can be slow to warm up to new situations.

The photos will also include backgrounds and objects that are more meaningful to you. It is a wonderful gift in the future to look back at photos and see the special things that were so important to your family, that you have forgotten all about.

I will be chatting and interacting with and your kids during the session

I am not a fly-on-the-wall type photographer just posing and snapping for an hour or two. You can expect me to arrive and chat with you and your kids before we get going. While we move through the session I will gently guide you but I will also ask you questions, ask your kids to show me their rooms or toys, interact with you to get to know you better. I am genuinely interested in people and the differences in how we live our lives and how we ended up where we are.

Before the session I will ask you to plan some activities

The goal of this is to make it easy for you to interact in natural ways while I am there. Think about the things you routinely do on the weekends as a family. Make cookies together, read picture books, play on your swing set, colour or build Lego. Those moments when you are engaged with your kids without your phone, or worrying about laundry or getting everyone to work, school, swimming lessons on time, when you are simply present are what you will want to remember.

You can expect to receive an email about a week before your session to confirm that we are good to go and that you have thought about what activities you have chosen for your session. This is a good time to run things by me that you may be unsure of or to brainstorm what would make for a good session for your family.

Yes, I will take some traditional portraits, but it is not the focus on the entire session

You can expect me to gather you for some traditional portraits during the session but these photos will only take up a small portion of the time I am there. There is a place for these types of photos on our walls but my focus will be on your connection.

I do not expect your children to ‘behave’, or look at the camera or smile on command. In letting go of these expectations we can relax and connect and actually have fun during our time together.

The last thing you can expect when you receive your keepsake video is your kids wanting to watch it over and over and over again.

Kids love to look at family photos with their parents because it reminds them they are safe and loved and an important part of their family unit whatever way that may look. It is the same with family films and keepsake videos. It helps that you are usually cuddled up together while watching.
