Booking a family photo session in Kincardine can feel stressful, especially when there are so many talented local family photographers to choose from. Finding the right photographer is about more than beautiful images — it’s about choosing someone whose style, approach, and personality work well with your family.
This post walks you through what to expect from a Kincardine family photo session with me, how I work, and what my photography experience feels like, so you can decide if we’re a good fit.
Family Photo Sessions with me will take place in and around your home
Most of my family photo sessions in Kincardine and Bruce County take place in and around your home.
Photographing families in their own space helps everyone feel more relaxed and at ease, especially children. Familiar surroundings make a big difference, particularly for younger kids who love their routines and can take time to warm up in new environments.
Your photos will also include the rooms, objects, and everyday details that matter to your family right now. Years from now, these details often become just as meaningful as the people in the frame.

I will be chatting and interacting with you and your kids during the session
I am not a fly-on-the-wall photographer who silently poses and snaps photos for an hour.
You can expect me to arrive and spend time chatting with you and your kids before we begin. During the session, I gently guide when needed, but I also ask questions, interact with your children, and invite them to show me their rooms, favourite toys, or something they love.
I’m genuinely interested in people and how families live their lives. Building comfort and trust is an important part of creating natural, honest photographs.
Before the Session, I’ll Ask You to Plan a Few Simple Activities
The goal of this is to make it easy for you to interact in natural ways while I am there. Think about the things you routinely do on the weekends as a family. Make cookies together, read picture books, play on your swing set, colour or build Lego. Those moments when you are engaged with your kids without your phone, or worrying about laundry or getting everyone to work, school, swimming lessons on time, when you are simply present are what you will want to remember.
You can expect to receive an email about a week before your session to confirm that we are good to go and that you have thought about what activities you have chosen for your session. This is a good time to run things by me that you may be unsure of or to brainstorm what would make for a good session for your family.

Yes, I Will Take Some Traditional Family Portraits — But They’re Not the Focus
You can expect me to gather you for some traditional portraits during the session but these photos will only take up a small portion of the time I am there. There is a place for these types of photos on our walls but my focus will be on your connection.
I do not expect your children to ‘behave’, or look at the camera or smile on command. In letting go of these expectations we can relax and connect and actually have fun during our time together.
Your Keepsake Video Will Likely Become a Family Favourite
One of the last things you can expect is that when you receive your keepsake video, your kids will want to watch it again and again.
Children love seeing themselves with their parents — it reinforces that they are safe, loved, and an important part of their family. Looking at family photos and watching your keepsake video together often becomes its own quiet ritual, usually involving cuddling on the couch and pressing play "just one more time.”
Frequently Asked Questions About Family Photo Sessions in Kincardine
How long does a family photo session last?
Most family photo sessions last between 1.5-2 hours, allowing plenty of time for kids to warm up and for moments to unfold naturally.
What should we wear for our family photo session?
I recommend comfortable clothing that feels like you. Try to steer clear of large words on shirts, big logos and characters and neon colours. Simple textures and layers photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on connection rather than outfits. That said, you do you. If your kid wants to wear that ratty shirt they've had on for the last three weeks straight and you want to capture it for memories, no problem.
Do you photograph families outside of Kincardine?
Yes. I photograph families throughout Bruce County, including Port Elgin, Walkerton, and surrounding areas.
What if my kids are shy or very active?
That’s completely okay. My sessions are designed to work with your kids exactly as they are, without pressure to perform or behave a certain way.
